Input tax credit restrictions proposed to be eased for pharma samples and expired goods

The GST Council has recommended amending Section 17(5) of the CGST Act, 2017, to allow input tax credit on free samples and goods destroyed or written off due to expiry as required by law.

The change if allowed could reduce tax costs for pharmaceutical manufacturers and ease the financial burden of mandatory write-offs.
