Food application for higher capacity does not entitle applicant to start operations on strength of existing registration

The Allahabad High Court has held that large-scale slaughterhouses require a FSSA licence and cannot rely only on a registration certificate. A registration certificate, GST or Udyam registration, laboratory reports, municipal NOC or even a pending licence application cannot substitute the statutory licence required under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

For slaughterhouse operators, registration is sufficient only within the prescribed petty-business limits; larger operations must obtain and maintain the appropriate FSSAI licence before commencing or restarting operations.
